The Mayer-Rothschild Foundation, Chicago, Illinois
I was honored to be named Executive Director of The Mayer-Rothschild Foundation as of January, 2018. I have worked with the Foundation, and its predecessor, the Hulda B. & Maurice L. Rothschild Foundation, and its late founder and President, Dr. Robert N. Mayer, for over two decades.
I am proud to work with our President, Debra E. Weese-Mayer, MD, and board of directors in pursuit of a Designation of Excellence in person-centered long-term care, denoting highly valued residential settings serving older adults across the nation.
The Foundation is pleased to announce its new research partners for the development of
The Mayer-Rothschild Foundation Designation of Excellence in Person-Centered Long-Term Care in December 2023. The Foundation was proud to launch the next phase of its work with
New York University's Hartford Institute of Geriatric Nursing and Rory Meyers College of Nursing as its primary research and practice partner.
In addition, the Foundation and NYU have selected five Centers of Excellence as design participants and data collection portals for our research and application strategies:
Bethel New Life, Chicago, Illinois;
Garden Spot Communities, New Hope, Pennsylvania;
The New Jewish Home, New York, NY, and Westchester County;
Beatitudes Campus, Phoenix, Arizona;
Sequoia Senior Living, San Francisco and Oakland, California.
The idea is to embed the resident's voice at the center of all care, treatment, built-environment and governance decisions of the care communities where they live, while creating a national Designation of Excellence to denote and encourage person-centered excellence in long-term care settings.
Evanston Animal Shelter Association, Evanston, Illinois
Our firm was engaged in 2021 to secure the private funds needed to build the new Evanston Animal Shelter in Evanston, Illiinois., The City of Evanston has demolished the old building, and the new, $8 million, no-kill, LEED Silver Evanston Animal Shelter serving Evanston, North Shore suburbs and unincorporated Cook County, will be open in October, 2024.
Many thanks to Cook County for its $2.85 M grant to the new Shelter, and to the people and government of Evanston who have committed to this vital new community center. Special thanks to the City Council of the City of Evanston under the leadership of Mayor Daniel Biss, who provided significant funding for all aspects of the project. Thanks to former Mayors Liz Tisdahl and Steve Hagerty who have both supported and championed this effort.
The public phase of the Evanston Animal Shelter Association's capital campaign launched in January, 2024 with the announcement of seeking to acquire $1.2 M in private funds. As of August, 2024, pledges and gifts amount to $770,000. We are delighted to have been awarded a new gift in July, 2024 of $100,000 by Evanston resident and animal lover Dana Pearl (her second such gift) to be used to challenge others to give to the campaign's completion.

The Cedars, Portland, Maine
In May, 2024, our firm was engaged by The Cedars, a premier older adult living community in Portland, which has been serving older adults from Maine, New England and across the country for 95 years, starting as the Jewish Home for the Aged. The Cedars is now one of a handful of care communities proving national leadership in person-centered care, evidence-based research outcomes and innovative applications, residential and community dementia and memory care, assisted and independent living and a growing basket of community engagement and services.
Our assignment is to engage the philanthropic community in a conversation about transformative giving to The Cedars. We are delighted to already be in deeply contextual conversations with a handful of interested individuals, families and foundations who have a interest in bringing The Cedars' financial and physical status up to the extraordinary level of the residential and care services provided by the organization to older adults in Maine and beyond.
